How to Style Your Bookshelves Like a Pro (and Not Be Intimidated)

Updated: Jul 18, 2023

I know, styling those bookshelves can be an ultra-intimidating task. Here are some tips to make this process a little easier.

  1. Add REAL books.

It seems obvious, doesn't it? But, you'd be surprised how often I see bookshelves with no books. Books will provide a nice and neat space filler for your shelves. Shelves with only décor can look cluttered and over-crowded. Place some books on the shelf standing up, while stacking others on their side. Place a fun small object on the stacked books to make it feel complete.

2. Leave some empty space.

Try to leave a bit of empty space on each shelf so the shelf doesn't look over-crowded. Put empty space in varying locations on each shelf to break it up.

3. Use artwork and greenery.

Add some nice color with artwork and plants. Plants are another great space-filler, like books. Add them to any spot that seems to be too "empty". Plants and artwork also help to release endorphins and make your home happier!

4. Choose décor items that vary in size and shape.

Varying the size and shape of items will help to give your shelves more depth, and will be more pleasing on the eyes. Try grouping items of different sizes together to create neat little sections of your shelf.

5. Finally, choose a color scheme for your shelves.

Whether it's just a "mixture of bright colors", or "grays and whites", or "woody naturals", try to keep it consistent across the entire bookshelf, or set of bookshelves, to make the space look more intentional and thought-out.
